HIA training courses exist in some countries and are occasionally offered at conferences to assist practitioners and to develop capacity. But for sustaining and further expanding HIA practice globally, efforts are needed that build up technical expertise and capacity for conducting HIA. Raising a new generation of HIA practitioners has been identified to be a pressing issue (see HIA International Best Practice Principles and Current Global HIA Practice).
Capacity building has been a continuous activity of the HIA4SD Project. In the first phase (2017-2020), the emphasis was placed on the training of PhD students from the project partner institutions that were specialised in HIA. In the second phase (2020-2023), the HIA4SD Project aims to contribute to the development of capacity in the use, oversight, and regulation of HIA at the national (project countries) and regional (sub-Saharan Africa) levels. More specifically, HIA short courses (2-4 days) are held in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mozambique and Tanzania. Further details on the implementation can be found in the corresponding country section.
In addition to the HIA short-courses, we are in the process of developing online HIA courses that will have a focus on large infrastructure development projects in sub-Saharan Africa. These courses will become available on a regular basis (to be announced on this website). Moreover, we provide the option to book our online or face-to-face HIA course on request by Ministries, private sector companies, educational institutions, impact assessment service providers, etc. For more information please contact .

The HIA4SD project is international research project lead by a multinational consortium based in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mozambique, Switzerland and Tanzania. The project aims to strengthen the application of health impact assessment as a regulatory mechanism to engage natural resource projects in working towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The project is funded by the r4d programme, which is a joint initiative of the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
